Drilling clean 35mm hinge cups

Concealed hinges only close flush when every cup sits at the same distance from the door edge. A jig turns that distance into a fixed stop.

Concealed Hinge Jig — 35mm Hole Drill Guide

1. Lay out the hinge positions

Mark the hinge centres on the back of the door, usually a few inches in from the top and bottom. Use the same marks on every door in a run so the hinges line up.

2. Set the edge distance once

Check the edge distance your hinge maker specifies and set the jig stop to it. Clamp the jig to the door edge so it cannot creep while you drill.

Test on scrap first. Drill one cup in an offcut of the same thickness and mount a hinge before you touch a finished door.

3. Drill to depth

Use a sharp Forstner bit and a depth collar. Let the bit cut at a steady speed and back out often to clear chips so the cup bottom stays flat.

  • Keep the drill square to the face of the door.
  • Stop at the collar; a cup that is too deep weakens the door.
  • Brush out chips before you seat the hinge.
