Sharp in three steps

  1. Match the file

Pick the round file that matches your chain pitch and fit it in the handle.

  2. File at the angle

Set the angle guide on the chain and stroke outward from inside each cutter.

  3. Check the rakers

Set the depth gauge over the rakers and level any that stand proud with the flat file.

Why the chain cuts straight

  • The angle guide keeps every stroke at the same angle, so cutters stay even and the chain does not pull to one side.
  • Hand filing does not overheat the cutters the way a fast grinder can.
  • The depth gauge sets the rakers, the other half of a chain that bites.
  • Fits 14" to 20" bars with dual locator holes.

Questions

Which file size do I need?

It depends on your chain pitch. Check the chain or the saw manual; the kit includes all three common sizes.

Why file the rakers?

If the rakers sit too high the cutter cannot bite, and a sharp chain still cuts like a dull one.

File kit or the Tenvik Chainsaw Sharpener?

The file kit is the low-cost hand method. The sharpener clamps on the bar and uses a crank for faster, guided work.

Dull chain was eating up my time and creating kickback hazard. Went through the kit once, read the guide, and my saw now cuts like it did new. Beats the $80 professional sharpenings.

The angle guide is the key. I was doing it wrong before this kit. Consistent 35-degree strokes and the blade goes back to being sharp.

Got all three file sizes, so I don't have to figure out which one fits my chain. Pouch keeps them from rattling around in my truck.

Manual sharpening takes patience and the first time took me 30 minutes. Second time 15 minutes. Third time I could do it eyes closed. Kit is solid, just steep learning curve.

Forestry work means I sharpen my saw three times a month. This kit pays for itself versus going to the shop. Canvas pouch survives the weather.

Homeowner with two saws. Don't use them enough to justify a commercial sharpener. This kit sits in the garage and I pull it out when I need it.

Six-inch flat file for rakers is something I didn't know I needed. Turns out bad rakers are half my sharpness problem.

Good introduction to hand-sharpening. I watch videos before each sharpening session still, but the kit is reliable and the guides help a lot.
